Clean Water Wells

As a line forms behind her, a child pumps water from the well Covenant Mercies drilled in Maundo North.

One of the most obvious, basic needs for human existence is clean water. In the developed world, clean water for drinking, bathing, and cooking is an assumed fact of life. For people living in rural Uganda, however, this basic life necessity is more aptly described as an extraordinary luxury. Most people walk long distances – sometimes as far as two miles – to fetch water that is rarely fit for human consumption.

In an effort to address this serious need in the regions where we are working, Covenant Mercies selected strategic locations for the drilling of two clean water wells in January 2004. One is located in the town of Nagongera, just outside the compound of Nagongera Gospel Centre (the church with whom we partner to administer our Orphan Sponsorship Program). The second is located within walking distance of our orphans’ homes, in a village called Maundo North. It is estimated that each of these wells may serve as many as 2,000 people, who walk from the surrounding villages to benefit from these plentiful sources of clean water.
