English as a Second Language (ESL)

An ESL student receives help from his teacher in the classroom.

Imagine yourself as a stranger in a strange land, regularly reminded by your inability to speak the majority language that you are isolated and limited in a variety of ways. This is the situation faced by many immigrant people living in our region of Southeastern Pennsylvania. Without the ability to speak English, neighborly relationships are challenging, job prospects are severely limited, and the goal of assimilation becomes exceedingly difficult.

In response to this need, Covenant Mercies has developed an English as a Second Language (ESL) ministry for those who desire to improve their English skills. Our program – based in internationally diverse Kennett Square – consists of two parts: a Wednesday evening classroom lesson and a Monday evening tutoring session. Classes are offered on beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, so the needs of all students can be met. In the end – especially due to friendships that develop through one-on-one tutoring – students receive not only improved English skills, but also a very practical expression of the love of Jesus Christ.
